Netgate directly on FTTH fibre

The ONT stays. The provider router can often go.

With a separate Ethernet ONT, Netgate can often manage the Internet connection directly and become the network’s only router and firewall. The result is a cleaner design without double NAT or an intermediate consumer box.

When it works

  • The provider hands off the service through an ONT with an Ethernet port.
  • Official parameters are available: DHCP or PPPoE, any VLAN, credentials and IPv6.
  • Voice and IPTV are unused or can be configured separately.
  • The Netgate WAN port and model suit the line speed and enabled services.

What you gain

  • No double NAT.
  • Firewall rules, VLANs, VPNs, DNS and logs in one appliance.
  • Direct Multi-WAN and failover control.
  • More control and less dependence on the provider box.

Before disconnecting the box

An integrated ONT, optical authentication, VoIP and IPTV can impose provider-specific constraints. We do not clone GPON identifiers or propose uncertified ONTs: we use the provider Ethernet ONT and officially supplied parameters.

Router freedom in Europe

The right to choose a router differs by country. The EuroFirewalls guide collects sources and positions for Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain.

Compatibility depends on the provider and line profile and must be checked before purchase.
